Ultra-wealthy investors

How do billionaires decide what to invest in?

Short answer

From my conversations with wealthy families and billionaires, I have found that investment decisions often begin with expertise, relationships, trust, and a clear understanding of the opportunity. The most sophisticated investors are not simply chasing the highest projected return. They want to understand the people involved, the risks, the investment structure, and whether the opportunity fits their existing priorities. I also see successful investors concentrating their expertise in specific niches rather than pretending to understand every industry.

Checklist

  • Understand the investor's existing areas of expertise.
  • Determine whether the opportunity fits their investment strike zone.
  • Evaluate the credibility and capabilities of the operating team.
  • Examine the structure and mechanics of the investment.
  • Understand the major risks and uncertainties.
  • Consider whether the investor can contribute strategic value.
  • Evaluate the quality of the relationship and referral.
  • Recognize the importance of long-term thinking and discipline.

From my talks

"High conviction, trust, and confidence are built through context. That is what drives sophisticated investor actions, not promised returns."

One example I have discussed involves our focus on profitable medical and dental practices. Rather than attempting to become experts in every asset class, we concentrate on an area where we understand the operators, businesses, and investment opportunities.

In my interview with Tony Robbins, we also discussed the importance of surrounding yourself with people who operate at a higher level and possess specialized expertise.

Tony explained how moving from being an operator to an owner changed his ability to scale businesses. That conversation reinforced the importance of having capable people involved in the companies and investments you own.

The lesson I take from these experiences is that the people, the investment structure, and the investor's understanding of the opportunity can matter more than an attractive projection.
